PE
We have PE every Tuesday morning this half term.
Homework
Every Friday homework is given out to be returned by the following Friday, which is when we test spellings.
Doodle Learning
Children should be logging into Doodle Learning each day if possible, but at least three times a week.
Doodle Learning gives them targeted questions to support their learning. These are four areas the children can access: Maths, Times Tables, English and Spelling. Their log on details are stuck into the back of their reading records. If there are any issues logging in, please get in contact.
Maths
The children have enjoyed learning new songs to help them learn their times tables with lots of children already making their way to achieving the different levels of our Times Tables Olympics.
Here are links to the songs we've been using:
Formal Written Methods
In Year 3, the children are introduced to the formal written methods for addition, subtraction, multiplication and division (column and bus stop). If you would like to support your child with this at home, please take a look at our calculation policy to see how we teach them at school.
How to Make a Marvellous Medicine Hook
Mrs Carrington explained that we would be learning about instructions to make a marvellous medicine. She showed us our potion bottles and explained we were going to make our own marvellous medicines! We went out to the garden to find all kinds of potions, crystals and all manner of things you might find in the bathroom cabinet to use to concoct a potion! We loved using the different resources to make our own medicines. Some of us even included ingredients from nature to concoct our potions. I wonder what the results on our patients might be…
Wellbeing Week
The focus for Wellbeing Week was learning through play. We began the week by taking a quiz to know what type of learners we are and continued our work on having a growth mindset linked to our Thrive targets and value of perseverance. The children had free access to craft materials and created their own growth mindset superhero and role played with their friends to develop some growth mindset phrases.
In Maths, Hazel Class used a version of Monopoly to practise their times tables. The children played the game and used their maths skills to keep track of their scores. They thoroughly enjoyed the game!
To develop our fine motor skills, which help our handwriting, we had time to explore different tasks which were set up around the room. We could choose to pipet water, use play dough, use tweezers to sort pom poms, thread cheerios onto spaghetti and hang mini washing onto washing lines under the tables.
Mrs Carrington set a challenge for Hazel Class to work together to achieve. They had to use guttering to help a ball travel from start to finish without touching it. They worked hard on a number of occasions to try to complete the challenge and got very close! We learnt from each other, and though it was frustrating, we got closer and closer to the finish each time.
Over the week, the children really enjoyed exploring different ways of learning.
Our Earths
To begin our Extreme Earth topic in Geography, we explored the layers of the Earth. We used plastercine to build up the layers and then cut our globes in half to see the cross-section of the layers.
Chocolate Frogs!
Today, Hazel Class made chocolate frogs from Harry Potter as part of our Book Week work. We enjoyed pouring the chocolate into the mould and popping our chocolate frog into our personalised packaging. Mostly we enjoyed eating them!
We also followed along with the illustrator of the modern Harry Potter books to draw Hogwarts!
Our Household Item Characters!
We created characters with our household item, giving them a personality and even role playing with them to act out the stories they might be involved in.
Book Week - Explorers!
“The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you'll go.”
― Dr. Seuss, I Can Read With My Eyes Shut!
Take a look at our Aliens Information Text story map at home. Can you show your family our actions?

Year 3 Science
This week, Year 3 came together to begin their new Science learning. They worked together to build skeletons. We then learnt the correct layout and names of some of the bones. Challenge them to tell you where their mandible is!
A Visit from the Big Bad Wolf
The children have had a fantastic term in their writing. It began with a visit from the Big Bad Wolf! We followed the clues; there were footprints, a wanted poster, a red cape and some children even heard howling! The children used their learning to write some excellent traditional tales. This past two weeks, we have been learning to perform the Adventures of Isabel poem by Ogden Nash. The children did amazingly and took part in a poetry slam with the other classes from Church View. It was wonderful to see them performing so confidently. They have now written their own verse for the poem which they are performing in class.
Maths Challenges
We started our Maths this year with some challenges around place value. Here we are working on putting a hundred square back together! This challenge is from Nrich, which has a plethora of other Maths challenges freely available to grow those Maths brains.
Boats for the Gingerbread Man
Hazel Class have had a wonderful start to the year as they are settling into the expectations that being in Key Stage 2 brings. We started the year with some team building activities, including building boats to help the Gingerbread man escape from the fox across the river without dissolving! The children worked hard together to test different materials which would work to make a boat that would be both waterproof and sturdy. Check out our photos to see some excellent boats!
