Mathematics
Maths at Norton Fitzwarren Church School
We are Mathematicians
At Norton Fitzwarren Church School, we believe that all children are mathematicians. We want every pupil to develop confidence, curiosity and enjoyment in mathematics, alongside the knowledge and skills needed to succeed both in school and beyond.
Our mathematics curriculum is built on a mastery approach, where children learn through carefully sequenced small steps that develop deep understanding. We have high expectations for all learners and are committed to ensuring that every child can achieve success in mathematics. Through a balance of conceptual understanding, procedural fluency and mathematical reasoning, pupils learn not only how to calculate but also why mathematical methods work.
Oracy is central to our approach. Children are encouraged to discuss, explain and justify their thinking using precise mathematical language. Through mathematical talk, collaboration and questioning, pupils deepen their understanding and become confident communicators of their ideas.
We actively promote a growth mindset, helping children to see challenge as an opportunity and mistakes as an important part of learning. Pupils develop resilience, perseverance and the confidence to tackle unfamiliar problems, recognising that effort and practice lead to success.
Through the use of practical resources, representations and carefully designed learning experiences, children learn to spot patterns, make connections and think logically. We nurture the mathematical habits of mind that enable pupils to become independent and reflective learners.
Our aim is to prepare children not only for future learning and assessment, but also for life in the wider world. By developing strong mathematical understanding, problem-solving skills and financial awareness, we equip pupils with the tools they need for everyday life.
Rooted in our Christian values, we strive to ensure that every child leaves Norton Fitzwarren Church School as a confident, capable and enthusiastic mathematician who believes in their own potential and is ready to embrace future challenges.
Times Tables
At our Norton Fitzwarren Church School, we believe that fluency in number and multiplication facts is fundamental to success in mathematics. Children who can recall key number facts accurately and efficiently are better able to focus on problem solving, reasoning and more complex mathematical concepts.
We are committed to developing confident, fluent mathematicians through a consistent whole-school approach which combines daily practice, regular assessment, celebration of achievement and home learning.
Our multiplication fluency programme is built around:
- FunKey Maths Cards
- Step Counting PowerPoints
- Mastery of the 38 Core Multiplication Facts
- Times Tables Olympics
- TTRockStars
This approach promotes automatic recall, confidence, resilience and a positive attitude towards mathematics.
Here is a parent guide to how parents and carers can support with times tables learning at home.
In Year 4, children take part in the Multiplication Tables Check. Please see the document below for morning information about the check and how to support children from Year 2 - 4 to prepare for this.
